ÌðÐÄÖ±²¥ Faculty Share Expertise on Disabilities, Immigration, and Elementary Learning in Education

ÌðÐÄÖ±²¥ College of Education and Social Sciences faculty Drs. Mary Fisher, Christy Roberts, Erica Kwiatkowski-Egizio and Edson Chipalo recently shared their expertise on disability studies, immigration, and elementary education.

Dr. Mary Fisher, associate professor of elementary and special education, recently published an article in , a critically acclaimed and widely-read journal in the field of disabilities.

The article is titled, “” and discusses how students with extensive support needs have better outcomes when they are included in general education settings and receive access to state-adopted general education standards.

Fisher also presented at the March 2024 Council for Exceptional Children Annual Conference alongside Dr. Christy Roberts, professor of special education to further discuss disabled students’ role in education. The education experts discussed, “Voices Not Yet Heard: Survey About State Instructional Mandate – Disability.”

Assistant Professor of Social Work Dr. Edson Chipalo also explored education in his recently published article in , a journal devoted to teacher preparation and continued professional development for educators.

Also, Chipalo examines parental involvement in children’s education among recently resettled refugees in his article, “.”  

Dr. Erica Kwiatkowski-Egizio, associate professor of secondary education, middle education, and foreign language programs, is serving several organizations. She has been appointed president of the Illinois Association of Teacher Education in Private Colleges (IATEPC). Her passion for teaching and student success transcends in her work outside of ÌðÐÄÖ±²¥ as she teaches eighth-grade algebra at St. Joseph Elementary School in Lockport without compensation. Her work at St. Joseph helps her to shape her curriculum for developing exceptional future middle school teachers at Lewis.
